Personality:

One would think of Yuuki as a cute, ordinary young girl on the surface, and in most respects she is. She's naive, with a positive outlook on life, and has a strong sense of right and wrong. She believes strongly in the concept of peace and doesn't easily budge on a subject. In that respect she's very stubborn and can on occasion be obstinate. She doesn't like to study, and often puts it off to the last minute and wouldn't do her homework unless prompted to. And even then it's only with her feet dragging.

On the other hand, if it's a subject Yuuki enjoys she's animated, and a go-getter. She excels in athletics, is flexible, and has beginners practice in the pole vault (she's a natural!). She loves sweets, and as a typical daddy's girl often gets her way and is definitely spoiled. Despite that, Yuuki is polite and modest. She doesn't think of herself as any better than anyone else, and she's very caring and empathetic toward individuals who might need help or are hurting. She's always sincere and heartfelt in her actions, but maintains a lighthearted and happy attitude toward life.

All of this is easily observed from an outsider's perspective, yet it doesn't really scratch the surface. Yuuki possess no memories of her life prior to the age of five. Her first memory was awaking alone in a blizzard, before being attacked and nearly killed by a rouge vampire. Another vampire, Kaname Kuran, saved her and brought her to live with her adoptive father, Headmaster Kaien Kurosu. Under Kaien's parental guidance he retaught her basic concepts, tolerance, and love. And Yuuki has come to idolize and adore Kaname, the kind vampire who saved her.

Although she believes strongly that humans and vampires can co-exist together, and that there are kind vampires, they, in general tend to frighten her. She continues to have nightmares throughout her childhood of being attacked and eaten. Some nights she can't sleep at all, and on occasion still wakes up screaming. Because of the nature of her first memory, Yuuki assumes that it is likely that her real parents were killed by a vampire. On occasion she harbors darker, thoughts, however, and wonders if maybe they hadn't wanted her and left her to die. These fears affect her daily life, as well. Yuuki can't leave far from home without feeling frightened, and on occasion freezing up. These panic attacks, once more, consist of her darker thoughts in regards to vampires. She tries to push them aside and insists she's old enough to not let them affect her. This fear however, causes her to be agoraphobic. If in familiar, comfortable surroundings, she fairs much better.

Most humans who learn of the existence of vampires have their memories removed immediately. Yuuki is a rare exception, allowed to keep her memories, despite her attack. The existence of vampires is supposed to be a closely guarded secret, and for that reason Yuuki keeps the matter between herself and her adoptive father (a former vampire hunter).

Once she turned twelve, a sudden, unexpected, turn in her life occurred. Zero Kiryuu, moved in with both Yuuki and Kaien after his family was murdered by a 'bad' vampire. Zero, unlike Yuuki, has no faith in vampires whatsoever, and despises them. He makes it no secret, and his contempt for the fact that she absolutely adores one is clear to Yuuki. Although Yuuki lacks the hatred Zero possesses, Yuuki is empathetic toward Zero and his situation. It is after Zero moved in that her nightmares began to fade. Because she was not the only one to have been victim of a vampire, she feels their situations are similar. Instead of worrying over her own fears, Yuuki devotes her time to soothing and trying to emotionally protect Zero. Over time, it's clear that, although it seems as though Zero may need her, it's Yuuki who needs him. She wants to be strong and confident, and able to be depended on.

Overall, Yuuki is sheltered but well loved.

The truth revolving around her past is, that, in actuality, Yuuki is a pureblood vampire. In order to save Yuuki from her murderous uncle, both Yuuki's parents died protecting her. Juri, her mother, gave her life in order to place a spell on her that both turned her human and erased her memories. Kaname Kuran is her brother (who we later find out is actually her ancestor), and since birth has been engaged to him (Incest is normal in the pureblood world :'| ). Eventually, in canon, the spell begins to wear off and Yuuki has to be awoken by her brother (Kaname), or else dissolve into madness. Her human body can't take the strain and weight of the memories and the fact that she is, in fact, an immortal and incredibly powerful vampire. The only way to fully awaken her is for her to be bitten by a pureblood within the Kuran clan, and then drink Kuran blood in turn.
